Free Trade and Fair Trade are not the same.

Free Trade is the traditional consumer market. In a corporate world in a global economy the goal is to support stockholders. The mission is to earn the largest profit with little or no concern about the environment or social justice issues. Essentially free trade looks for the cheapest way to buy goods to maximize profit.

Fair Trade has 8 principles that result in a sustainable system to create wealth for all. These principles are:

• Pays a living wage in a local context

• Provides practical support to workers

• Supporting safe, healthy, work environments where workers have a voice

• Fair trade businesses work in a way that protects the environment

• Offers public accountability

• Respects cultural heritage

• Builds direct and long term relationships

• Educates consumers about fair trade
